Prescription diets: Hill’s j/d and Purina JM are prescription diets formulated to help pets with bone and joint disorders. Hill’s r/d and Purina OM are reducing diets which help to return pets to their optimal body weights. Anti-inflammatory medications: Deramaxx and Metacam are common powerful prescription anti-inflammatory medications which reduces swelling and pain. Because all anti-inflammatory drugs can have serious side effects, our goal is to use them at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest time necessary. Pain relief: Tramadol is a powerful prescription pain relieving medication commonly used to relieve pain. Other pain relieving medications are Buprenorphine, Butorphanol, Gabapentin.
Adequan: This is a polysulfated glycosaminoglycan. It improves the health of the cartilage and joint fluid and slows the progression of further arthritis. It is administered by intramuscular injections twice weekly for 4 weeks, weekly for 4 weeks, every other week for 4 weeks, then monthly or as needed to maintain an adequate comfort level. Some pets will complete the initial series and never need further injections while others benefit from injections every 1-3 months long term.
Dietary Supplements: Synovi G3 is an excellent joint protectant supplement containing glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and antioxidants. It will nourish and protect the joints, reduce inflammation and slow the progression of arthritis. It comes as a granule that can be sprinkled on the food or as a soft chew. Duralactin is an immuno-nutritional aid for the management of chronic inflammatory conditions. It is vanilla flavored and is available in either a chewable tablet or as a granule. Omega fatty acids, such as 3V HP Snip Tip Caps, are anti-oxidants which reduce inflammation. The capsule may be administered whole or the tip can be snipped off the capsule and the oil squeezed onto the food.
