What to Expect Following V.O.M. Therapy

Percy VOM

Following V.O.M. Therapy Your Pet May:

  • need to urinate or defecate right away. Dogs may take a quick walk through our "potty station" on the south side of the building before driving home. Cats can visit a litter box in the hospital.
  • sleep more than normal. Healing takes a lot of energy and pets will sleep more when they are healing.
  • be extra thirsty. Water helps to flush out the byproducts of neurological interferences.
  • May get a little worse before they get better. About 1 in 35 patients may have restlessness, increased soreness or loose stools for a day or so following the first treatment. This phenomenon is beneficial as it signals that healing has begun.

Activity Restrictions Following V.O.M. Therapy:

  • Short leash walks several times a day are ideal exercise.
  • Avoid climbing stairs if possible.
  • No running or playing ball.
  • Prevent jumping off of couches, beds and counters.
  • Prevent jumping in and out of the car.
  • No movement in the car while driving or jumping between seats.

Maintenance Schedule:

Following the initial five treatments many pets will be cured and need no further treatments; especially cats! However, some pets with chronic diseases, arthritis, birth defects, physically demanding lifestyles or pets that participate in competitive sports may require a regular schedule of maintenance V.O.M. therapy. This is designed to keep them at their healthiest throughout life.

When to Call West Hills Animal Hospital:

  • If your pets symptoms reoccur more than 1-2 days before the next scheduled V.O.M. treatment.
  • If anything worries you or you have any questions.
