SMALL MAMMALS
Examples of small mammals most commonly kept as pets include rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, hedgehogs and ferrets. These animals all have specific dietary and husbandry (care + environment) requirements. Some, however, fill a similar niche in the environment and do have some requirements in common. Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and hamsters, for example, all do best in cool (65 degrees F) environments and are susceptible to heat exhaustion. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas are all herbivores and do not tolerate seed-based diets.
All small mammals require people who are knowledgeable in their specific needs, are attuned to their habits and personalities, and who will care for them in the best way possible.
